Poem Off

This activity can be used as a full-day activity, or as a supplemental (even quick) activity. Many potential variations of this concept are possible.

General idea: As individuals, small groups, or large teams – craft a poem or song that includes the science content being covered. For example, in physical science Newton’s Three Laws of Motion might be a topic appropriate for this activity.

Once the poem/song is crafted in a group or team, allow the teams to compete with their creativity against other teams.

A Colour Symphony

Consider suggesting student-exploration of four portions of Authur Bliss’ musical work called “A Colour Symphony

Likely, this can/should be done as an extra activity outside of the classroom. Encourage students to think through how (if at all) each musical piece successfully invokes mental images of the corresponding color. Also, consideration of the physical science principles providing instruments with their function. Throughout history, musical instruments have an underlying set of science principles.

Arthur Bliss: A Colour Symphony (1921/1932)

31:59  Purple

Slow and majestic in pace and ceremonial in character. The colour of Amethysts, Pageantry, Royalty and Death.

6:18 Red

A glittering, spiky and percussive scherzo, reminiscent of Stravinsky. The colour of Rubies, Wine, Revelry, Furnaces, Courage and Magic.

13:20 Blue

Slow, with chords used to depict the lapping of water against a moored boat or a pier. The colour of Sapphires, Deep Water, Skies, Loyalty and Melancholy.

23:29 Green

A double fugue (which has been described as “Schoenbergian”) on violas, strings, clarinets and woodwinds, leading to a triumphant climax. The colour of Emeralds, Hope, Youth, Joy, Spring and Victory.
