Plant Cells

Topic (15) Use a model about photosynthesis how light transforms to chemical energy. (HS-LS1-5)

Plant cells share similarities with animal cells but also have distinct features such as a cell wall. Like all organisms, plants have cells. Plant cells have a nucleus with chromosomes and DNA, and they have mitochondria. Those are common to all eukaryote cells. But in some ways, plant cells are different from animal cells and the cells of other eukaryotes (see topic 16 about eukaryotes).

Compare Contrast and Debate

Kick-Off Debate Background:

Wikipedia Extract: Genetically modified maize (corn) is a genetically modified crop. Specific maize strains have been genetically engineered to express agriculturally-desirable traits, including resistance to pests and to herbicides. Maize strains with both traits are now in use in multiple countries. GM maize has also caused controversy with respect to possible health effects, impact on other insects and impact on other plants via gene flow. One strain, called Starlink, was approved only for animal feed in the US, but was found in food, leading to a series of recalls starting in 2000.

  • Position A: Genetically Modified plants should be banned in all situations.
  • Position B: Research and production of genetically modified plants – including plants as food for humans – should continue and become common-place.
