Introduction to Motion

The physics of motion is all about forces. Forces need to act upon an object to get it moving, or to change its motion. Physical scientists (called physicists) use some basic terms when they look at motion. For example, how fast an object moves, its speed or velocity, can be influenced by forces.

Special Notes

Instructor Emphasis:

  • Science & Engineering Practice: Use mathematical and computational thinking.
  • Cross-Cutting Concept: Cause and Effect: Mechanisms and explanations.
Standards Concepts
  • If a force acts on an object in the same direction as the direction of its motion, the object’s speed will continue to increase while the force is acting.
  • Motion energy (kinetic energy) is associated with the speed and the mass of an object.
