General Tips to Improved Science Score

Generally, skip reading the text for first questions in an item – go straight to the question, scan answer choices, try to find answer in the graph, table, chart, matrix. Go to the text only when the illustrations can not fully answer a question. Usually the first two questions in an item do not require the text on data-heavy questions. Usually the first two questions on any item are easier to answer than the 3, 4 and 5 questions. Be willing to skip the difficult questions on an item and come back to them later:

  • Answer all of the easiest questions first.
  • Eliminate choices when possible on difficult questions.
  • Save time at end to select a choice from all remaining questions.
  • Practice reading charts, graphs, tables, and information diagrams.
  • Practice reading moderately difficult text related to science research.
  • Prepare for questions presenting conflicting viewpoints.
  • Review scientific investigation steps and scientific method.
  • Establish proficiency in working with independent and dependent variables.
