How to Cite Research

Common Citation “Styles”

Some research allows for the student choosing a “style” to reference sources. Other times, your instructor or institution will have a standard used. In those instances, you will be required to use the style required for that situation.

Common Styles:

  • APA
  • MLA
  • Chicago

Why is Citation Important?

High school students should begin learning (and doing) the proper citation of sources in their research papers and presentations. There are several reasons why citations are important:

  1. Citations add authority to research. Citations demonstrate that you did not “just make up” the information.
  2. Citations are expected by the original author or researcher. Giving appropriate credit to the original sources is appropriate (and even in some cases, a legal requirement).
  3. Sometimes those reviewing your research are interested in discovering more information. Your citations make that exploration more efficient. In fact, that is one way you might consider exploring an existing article in more depth. Find sources from “your sources” to dive deeper into your topic.
  4. Citations assist you in avoiding plagiarism.
