What is Biology?
Biology is a natural science. Biology is the scientific study of living things – one of several of the Life Sciences. Biology is a natural science involving the study of life and living organisms. High school biology students study key concepts that will help them make sense of life science. The ideas are built upon students’ science understanding of disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts from earlier grades. There are four core ideas in high school biology:
- From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
- Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics
- Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits
- Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity.
Performance expectations for high school life science blend core ideas with scientific and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts to support students in developing useable knowledge that can be applied across the science disciplines. (more)

Compare Contrast and Debate
Kickoff Debate Background: Academic standards are used to guide teachers in their instruction and students in their learning endeavors.
- Position A: All states should adopt identical academic standards for biology.
- Position B: Each state should create its own academic standards for biology.
