Magnetism
In physics, magnetism is a force that can attract (pull closer) or repel (push away) objects that have a magnetic material like iron inside them (magnetic objects). Magnetism is a property of certain substances which pull closer or repel other objects. Magnetism is caused by the motion of electric charges.

Compare Contrast and Debate
Background: Absolute North and magnetic North are not exactly the same. Maps and other directions are typically communicated using absolute North. This means that using a compass requires correcting the measurement for the declination (or difference) between the reading on the compass compared to absolute North.
- Position A: Some people argue that maps should be created to align with magnetic North rather than absolute North so that no correction is required to use a compass.
- Position B: Others believe that the way maps are constructed – to align with absolute North – are appropriate, and that correcting for the declination of magnetic North is not that difficult to do.
