Solutions in Chemistry
In chemistry, a solution is a special type of homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances. In such a mixture, a solute is a substance dissolved in another substance, known as a solvent. The word “homogeneous” means “consisting of parts all of the same kind.”

One example of solutions in chemistry is found in the kitchen. People across the globe make tea. In the USA, a southern tradition for tea-making creates an extra sweet version of iced tea that many people enjoy. Some people, though, prefer iced tea without the extra sweetness. By dissolving sugar in HOT water, rather than room temperature water, extra sugar can be added – without the sugar “falling out” (or, precipitating).
- Position A: “Southern Sweet Tea” takes more effort, perhaps – but the extra sugar makes it more fun to drink.
- Position B: .Regular tea, without all the extra ‘super-saturated’ sugar water is easier to make and just as tasty.
