Typical Math Sequence in High School

Arithmetic Mastery – Generally, students entering high school are expected to have prior mastery of arithmetic. These skills include addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, and order of operations. A series of (Middle-Grade Level) worksheets appear below for convenient review and reinforcement of these skills. Honeycutt Science generally presumes students already have mastered basic arithmetic skills. (Assumed Skills in Honeycutt Science).

Algebra 1 – This part of mathematics is when letters and other general symbols are used to represent numbers and quantities in formulas and equations. In lower-level high school science classes (Physical Science and Biology I), students make use of beginning algebra concepts. These include the use of variables, physical relationships such as force equals mass times acceleration (F=ma), the use of subscripts such as F1 and F2, and squares and powers-of functions. Honeycutt Science emphasizes and includes algebra I skills throughout all four core subects. (Frequently Emphasized Skills in Honeycutt Science).

Geometry – This branch of mathematics is concerned with the properties and relations of points, lines, surfaces, solids, and higher dimensional analogs. Earth science in particular makes use of geometry and geometric principles. Geometry helps answer and clarify questions of shape, size, relative position of figures, and properties of space. Honeycutt Science topics often includes concepts of geometry – especially in Earth science and chemistry. (Occasionally Included Skills in Honeycutt Science).

Algebra 2/Trigonometry (Pre-calculus) – in math education, pre-calculus is a course that includes algebra and trigonometry at a level designed to prepare students for the study of calculus. These higher level high school math topics include the transformation of matrices, introduction to linear functions, and systems of equations and inequalities, polynomials, radicals, quadratic functions, logarithms, polynomial functions, and the unit circle and angle measures. While several TI-Nspire activities require familiarity with these concepts, the core Honeycutt Science topics and activities do not presume mastery of these higher-math skills. (Useful but not Emphasized Skills in Honeycutt Science).

Calculus – this branch of mathematics deals with the finding and properties of derivatives and integrals of functions, by methods originally based on the summation of infinitesimal differences. There are two main types of calculus: differential calculus and integral calculus. Honeycutt Science topics do not currently include, require or presume skills in calculus. (Admirable, but not Emphasized or Included Skills in Honeycutt Science).
