What Upward Bound?
The Upward Bound program is led by the US Department of Education, It is one of the eight TRIO programs. TRIO programs give students help with school, counseling, mentoring, money advice, and other support so they can go to college and stay there.
The programs also help colleges and agencies with training and services for low-income students and students with disabilities. Each year, these colleges and agencies help almost a million low-income students and students with disabilities go to college and stay in school.
What Upward Bound Does
The program helps high school students get ready for college. It offers support to those from families with low income or where neither parent has a bachelor’s degree. Upward Bound aims to help students do well in high school and succeed in college. The program wants to increase the number of students who finish high school, go to college, and graduate from college.
What Upward Bound Offers
In Upward Bound, students get help with math, science, writing, reading, and foreign languages. They also get tutoring, counseling, mentoring, and chances to learn about different cultures. The program also helps students with work-study programs and teaches them about money. It offers special help for students who are learning English, students who aren’t usually represented in college, students with disabilities, homeless students, and students in foster care.

All Upward Bound programs have to teach math, science, writing, reading, and foreign languages. They also give students information about different ways to pay for college. The program also helps students who want to go back to high school, go to a different kind of school, or get a high school diploma.
Nationally, TRIO students are more than twice as likely to remain in college as those from similar backgrounds who do not participate in such programs.
As of May, 2024, combined TRIO programs in Oklahoma serve about 27,000 students each year.

The Upward Bound and UB Math/Science Programs at Carl Albert State College are 100% funded by grants from the US Department of Education. The program serves about 100 students each year.
About John Honeycutt
John Honeycutt is one of dozens of certified educators enlisted by CACS UBMS for summer courses. He began instructing summer programs with CASC in 2019. He instructed Earth science virtually in 2020 during the pandemic from the CASC Sallisaw Campus. All other courses have been traditional, classroom instruction at the CASC Poteau Campus.
