Welcome to Biology

It’s about life and living organisms.

This web site provides free-to-use biology curriculum for high school teachers, students, and parent-guardians. Biology is the natural science involving the study of life and living organisms. This includes the study of physical and chemical structure, function, development and evolution. Modern biology is a vast field.

Biology is composed of many branches. Even though biology is broad in scope, there are several unifying concepts across the field. Biology recognizes the cell as the basic unit of life. Genes are recognized as the basic unit of heredity.

Evolution concepts explain the development of new species. Another important unifying concept is that all organisms survive by consuming and transforming energy and by regulating their internal environment.

Sub-disciplines of biology are defined through several aspects.  One way to subdivide biology disciplines is through the kinds of organisms studied. Another way to subdivide biology disciplines is through the methods used to study life. For example, biochemistry examines the rudimentary chemistry of life. Molecular biology studies interactions among biological molecules. Cellular biology examines the basic building-block of all life – the cell.

Physiology looks at physical and chemical functions of tissues, organs, and organ systems. Ecology examines how organisms interact in their environment. Evolutionary biology examines the processes that produced the diversity of life.

Find dozens of standards-based biology topics on this site. While content provided may be used as stand-alone material, ideally each topic will serve as a supplement to school-provided textbooks and other reference material.

Take the Journey

Plants, animals, and lots of gross things too … what could be more interesting than the world of the living things – of life? There are so many things each of us take for granted. It’s easy to overlook the majesty of life if we don’t take pause.

Explore New Insights

There are so many things in the pursuit of biology as a science that we sort-of, kind-of already know. But, the world can look very different when we explore deeper. Through your exploration, what understandings might become clearer and more vivid – harmonious and more rhythmical –  textured and more relevant?

Discover More About You and Your World

You may already know this – but, you are fascinating! We all are. Just outside is an amazing world of small things, big things, microscopic things, and hidden things. Life is so much a part of our world that we may not ever fully grasp its complexity, power and beauty. You have an opportunity in front of you. Discover more about your world – about life – and even about yourself.
