Limiting Reactants and Percent Yield
The limiting reactant (or, limiting reagent) is a reactant in a chemical reaction that determines the amount of product that is formed. Identification of the limiting reactant makes it possible to calculate the theoretical yield of a reaction. Of the reactants involved, the reactant that runs out first – and limits the amount of products formed – is called the limiting reactant. Using concepts from this topic, students become familiar with important chemistry skills – calculation of percent yield and the theoretical yield of a reaction’s products.
